Why nichiyomu

Reading is the fastest way to make a language stick.

Flashcards and grammar drills get you the pieces. Reading is where they snap together into a language you can actually use, because you meet every word and pattern in a sentence that means something.

The difficulty is finding material at your exact level. Most is either too easy to teach you anything or too hard to enjoy. That gap is exactly what Nichiyomu closes.

Right level, every time

Nichiyomu determines your reading level to pick texts in your sweet spot: Challenging enough to grow, easy enough to finish.

Built-in support

Furigana, translations, kanji breakdowns and grammar notes are one tap away, so you keep momentum instead of switching between apps.

Habit over hours

Short, finishable passages turn reading into a daily habit. A few minutes a day compounds into real progress.

How it works

01

Read Japanese texts

A large and growing library of passages across all JLPT levels, with furigana, kanji lists, grammar explanations and audio readings.

02

Rate your comprehension

After each text, mark it as Easy, Medium, or Hard. No quizzes, no pressure, just honest self-assessment.

03

The app adapts to you

Your reading level is tracked with a rating system, so you always get texts at the right difficulty.

04

Track your progress

Watch your reading level improve over time with streaks, stats, and JLPT-level benchmarks.

Frequently asked questions

What JLPT levels does Nichiyomu cover?

All of them, from N5 to N1. You pick a starting level during onboarding, and an Elo-based rating system takes the difficulty from there based on how well you actually read.

Is Nichiyomu free?

Yes. The free plan gives you three texts a day with furigana. Paid plans remove the daily limit and add kanji breakdowns, grammar explanations and audio readings.

Who is Nichiyomu for?

Everyone (kind of)! While the texts range in skills from N5 to N1, we do recommend for users to already know basic hiragana, as we currently do not offer romaji (Latin readings) of the texts. If you are a completely new learner, we recommend focusing on hiragana first and joining us once you can read them without too much trouble.

How does Nichiyomu choose texts for me?

It matches each text to your current reading level. Every time you rate a text Easy, Medium or Hard, your estimated ability updates and the next text is chosen to sit just above it: challenging enough to grow, easy enough to finish.

How is Nichiyomu best used?

Nichiyomu works best as a supplement to your wider Japanese study. Reading real texts reinforces the vocabulary and kanji you pick up from tools like Anki and puts them into context, so we recommend to use it alongside your usual routine rather than as a replacement for it.

Do I need an account to use Nichiyomu?

Yes, but it is free. Creating an account takes a few seconds and gives you three texts a day with furigana, and lets you track your reading level, build a streak, and see translations.

See the pricing page for what each plan includes.
